The Transvaal museum, is situated in Pretoria, on Paul Kruger Street and is now known as theĀ Ditsong National Museum of Natural History. The museum houses a diverse collection of invertebrates, mammals, reptiles and birds as well as the best specimen of an Australopithecus africanus skull, affectionately named Mrs Ples. The museum was originally founded in 1895 as the “Staatsmuseum” which is the Afrikaans translation for State Museum.
